When I were a lad |
When in 1947 my father came out of the air force he bought himself an old 6 wheeler Austin K6 tipper(picture right). He managed to get himself a contract with Trentham Gravel Co. he was to deliver sand and gravel around Staffordshire, Cheshire and Lancashire. At home my mother had four small children to cope with and often insisted that my dad took me with him to work every day despite the fact I was not older then 3 years old, not something I think we could get away with nowadays. We did this right up until I started school at the age of 5. Ever since i can remember and right up until this day i have had a weak bladder, so I pay more time in the Jon then the average Joe. now you can imaging my fathers frustration having to stop every hour at the side of the road just so i can relieve myself. One weekend I can distinctly remember seeing my father working on his beloved truck with his tools without fully understanding what he was up to until when we were out once again delivering sand and gravel I once again asked my dad if i could stop for a wee, my dad then showed me a hole in the floor he had cut out with a lid on top. All I needed to do was lift the flap and wee as we traveled. " Fantastic". I did learn one very important lesson from this incident, its much much wiser to use the flap when going up hill and not down because the wind has a tenancy to blow wee right into your face. Just a quick note to say the truck is pictured to the right both back when I were a lad and to the current day, which is currently parked in a farmers yard rotting away, much to my disapproval.
