The Austin Years

The Austin Motor Co.Ltd was established in 1908 however other then light commercials didnt begin to build trucks until 1913. The first truck was a 2-3 tonner of a unusual design, having a 29hp 4 cylinder gasoline engine mounted ahead of the radiator. a 4 speed gearbox with a twin propshafts drove the rear wheels. Aprox 2000 trucks were built but Austin then left the truck market until 1939 when it launched a completely new range. Often referred to as the Birmingham Bedford as they bore much resemblance to the mentioned Co.

The K models were produce in large volumes for use during WWII. 1950 was the time that they launched the Loadstar and also began to offer Perkins Deisel Options. 1950 was a significant year with the formation of the British Motor Corporation(BMC) by the merger of Austin and the Nuffield organization who produced Morris commercial trucks. BMC next design was the unusual FG range which featured a new concept in cabs with entrance doors on the back corners, considered to be a safety feature. In 1961 BMC opened at Bathgate in Scotland. A new model the FJ appeared in 1964 and was one of the first British trucks to feature a tilt cab.

After the formation of of the Brish Leyland Motor Corporation in 1968, created by the merger of British Motor Holdings and the Leyland, Austons and there Morris counterparts were all badged as BMC and from 1970 all carried the Leyland name and were marketed as the redline range.
